Default New codecs?

Hi all,
I rented a DVD the other day that refused to play on my computer. I'm running XP Pro and usually watch my DVDs through WinDVD4 (old, I know but it works - at least until now ). The computer recognised that it was a DVD and asked what program I wanted to play it with as per normal. I tried every player to hand and nothing worked. All my other DVDs run fine, and two others that I rented at the same time were ok. This one, however, wouldn't run. I tried PowerDVD as well and no luck. I even got the rental store to switch it for another copy and the story was the same. The guy at the store said it might be because the player's not supported by whoever pressed the DVDs - not sure I'm buying that.

Do you reckon I need new codes (if so, how?) or could it be something else?

Any and all help appreciated, cheers.

Ok, I've tried the latest version of power DVD and I've tried the k-lite codec pack. Neither has helped. Anybody got any suggestions?

On two rented dvds and one bought? VLC seems to play it, though, so I've no idea what the problem is. At elast I can watch it now!

Come to think of it, what DVD was it? It wasn't a Sony disc, was it?

It was the (highly recommended btw) 'Run, Fatboy, Run'. Not sony, but Village Roadshow/New Line. You're thinking of the dodgy copy protection software issues?

I was, exactly.

Although sometimes discs just don't work, unfortunately.

VLC plays it so it's all good. So long as I can see my movies I'm happy.
