Default I got a virus problem, please help!

Ok, i have a desktop, kind of old, 2-3 years old, and i think i got a virus. I was going to a site to watch movies and then it said i needed to download some thing to watch it. So i downloaded it and guess what. The browser closed and when i opened IE again, there is a browser saying, Critical malware found, you have to download anti-malware software, i click OK
and then it leads me to a site where you buy the thing for like 50 bucks. I close it, next time i open same thing happens. And now on my taskbar on the right, it has icons flickering and telling me to click and update my computer with malware killing programs.

I really dont noe what to do.... is there really a big virus in my pc or is it a virus it self?

Thx for reading it and hope you can give me some advice,
Milfire

Is it doing on all websites or just this one???

Reformat your PC if you have the OS disk.

Also, you might get more help in the software forum.

Before reformatting and reinstalling Windows, I'd attempt to uninstall the program causing the popups, either using Control Panel or by running a manual scan. If that doesn't work, run AV and anti-spyware programs. If you don't have any, there are free ones available:

AV - AVG, Avast
AS - Spybot, Adaware, AVG AS

There are also online scanners you can use: Trend Micro is one; I think Kaspersky has one, too.

Another possible fix is running CCleaner.

Try Download.com or Snapfiles.com to download freebies. There are other sites as well. If somebody else has other preferences, you'll see them posted.

You don't just click something and download these days, you know. Or at least get an anti-virus software before clicking and clicking.

Get AVG [your PC's 2-3 years old, so it'd probably handle AVG better than Avast].

Try using another browser [Firefox] and download real anti-spyware, like Ad-Aware. The "virus" probably causes IE to act that way.

Hope this helps.

Download AntiVir. It's a free AntiVirus and its better than AVG or Avast. Also, AntiVir doesnt hog system resources, so if your PC is oldish, AntiVir should be perfect.

Download AntiVir here: www.free-av.com

As for spyware, i would use Spybot as it is free. It can be found here.
