Internet Explorer Not Responding

This forum has been so helpful to me! I was hoping someone might suggest what is wrong when I open Internet Explorer on my new HP 9500? Sometimes it won't load at all. Other times I can see the main page for MSN or Yahoo etc ... then when I want to click on a link or type in a search ... its frozen. Eventually I get a "not responding". I have to go to the Task Manager to "End Task" to get IE to close. Windows sends the message that "Internet Explorer it not responding" and gives the options to: "restart, close or wait". Vista tries to check for solutions then *poof* the window goes away without any kind of feedback as to what just happened to make IE freeze.
My DSL connection is fine. I can open AOL without any problems.

Try running IE in no add-on mode. This will just run IE without any third party add-ons. This will help to identify if one of the add-ons are causing the problems. To run IE in no add-on mode click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Download Mozilla Firefox and use that instead! XD

Downloaded Mozilla Firefox. It still feels like there's a problem. My first click on a link was not responding. I it the red x to stop the loading, then clicked to reload. The page opened. Still other links hesitate but not nearly as long. Seems something else may be at foot here. Like maybe Vista is checking the source before loading the page????

Personally I've not felt any sort of "speed" difference between my Firefox and IE browsers when switching between XP and Vista so I wouldn't imagine Vista would be checking the source. Is your internet connection behaving as it should be for other applications? Aside from that are you running any sort of anti-virus application that may "pre-scan" pages for malicious information or threats?

Hi Sub-D, yes the internet connection is working a-okay for my other applications on the HP9500 and also for a second laptop running XP. Both are on the wireless network. I turned Norton off. An annoying program (would love suggestions of better anti-virus software). AOL is my primary email program - perhaps its auto virus scanning could be causing??? However it has never been a problem on the XP laptop.

I'm stumped! But determined to figure this out.

You mentioned AOL Moges . . . I think you've got a junk/bloatware problem not an issue with your browser. Have you cleaned your new machine yet? A friend recently bought a new eMachines desktop; her machine acted just as yours does now until we cleaned it up.
