Default Wireless router?

We have a HP zx5000 ordered with 4g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth installed.

It will be used with DSL (Netspeed). We will be installing this in the near future, and don't know anything about how they install/connect it etc.

What wireless routers should I be looking at? Are there any good ones that Best Buy sells? good price online?

HP zx5000 - Ordered 8/15, est. delivery 24th - P4 3.0HT, XP Home - 15.4" Widescreen/Brightview WXGA - 128mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 - 512MB SDRAM (1x512) - 60GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive - DVD/CD-RW Drive - 54g Integ Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth - 12 Cell Battery = $1577

Hi fishcube,
I would look at the netgear routers, mine has been very reliable. Before that I had two linksys ones that would always be dropping the connections and requiring a reset, so from now on no more linksys for me.

I ALWAYS do a search before posting, but I couldn't find specific router info through the search.

It doesn't hurt to ask again, since there are always others looking for the same info.

I have a linksys wireless "G" router, and it works great for me.

I use the D-Link DI514, I think it's called. The 802.11b one. I got it when they were having a rebate program, so I got a network card for another computer at the same time and paid like $60 for both after the rebates. You don't need an 802.11a or g router for home use, as 802.11b is faster than the fastest broadband connection by a wide margin. More expensive routers are a waste of money.

That's all the wireless stuff they have. You should find what you need. You can even buy direct from them, if you don't want to hunt to around for it.

Yea, i also use the Linksys wireless "G" router. Several of my friends also use it and have been using it for some time now, it came highly recommended by them. I have no complaints.

For most people, any wireless router will work just fine. while some of us purists will argue small technical points around here, for the most part it doesn't much matter to the average end user. Go take a look at whatever they have and you should be able to buy something decent. A few things to consider...

1. You need a router with DSL. It allows you to share the signal and it provides a lot of additional security protection. So, start with the idea that you need a router. Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link are some of the brands you will commonly see. Any of them will work fine.

2. I assume you will want to connect wirelessly. If so, get a router that includes wireless capabilities. You need either the B or G standard. Either will work just fine for surfing the web. G gives you a bit more speed if you plan to transfer files between computers across the wireless link but it costs a little bit more.

Beyond that, there are a few nice-to-have features such as MAC address cloning, better wireless encryption, and VPN tunnelling but the vast majority of people would never know or care about such things.
