Default Linux reformat

I currently have ubuntu on an external hard drive and windows vista as main
when i go to start my computer i have to have my external hard drive plugged in or windows won't boot b/c i ended up putting the loader on the external hard drive.
i want to reformat my external hdd but can't do that without it messing up windows startup.
is there anyway to move the loader to the windows hard drive? or anyway to reform the external hard drive w/o it messing up my windows installation?
thanks!

By formatting your external hard drive, you are not technically doing any damage to your windows install. It will still all be there and in working order, the only problem is you will have no way to load it.

What you can do is put in your windows installation disks and run some commands to fix/replace the windows boot loader (I can't remember the commands.. you could probably google that). Then, you should be able to boot your computer without the external hard drive plugged in and your computer will boot straight into windows.

It's been a while since I've played with linux like this, but I remember having to fix the windows boot loader for a friend once after he didn't want linux anymore.
