How to Download Microsoft Windows 7 for Free Discussion
There are times when you need a copy of Windows on hand to accomplish something. You might need to install a new Windows component, or boot to the OS disc to fix something gone haywire. Thanks for the article, J.R.
One thing that you should note is that Microsoft also provides a free tool that can be used to create a bootable USB drive containing the Windows 7 installation files. This makes a DVD no longer necessary (and is useful especially if the computer does not come with an optical drive). The USB drive needs to be at least 4 GB in size though.

Good point, and one I was going to mention, then got sidetracked; thanks for adding it.
Another thing to mention - if you aren't going to reformat the drive entirely, you can just run the Windows 7 installation and copy the necessary files to your drive; the computer will then boot to that and install everything alongside your old copy of Windows.
It's fast, and helpful if you don't want to / can't move large numbers of files off of your drive before installing.Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est.

You really should note that these downloads will not work with the keys affixed to the computer in your possession.
The keys on the computer are OEM keys, and the downloads listed here use require RETAIL keys. You can't switch keys and expect it to work.Brighthand Moderator
