ASUS introduces upgradeable MXM graphics cards
ASUS has created desktop graphics cards with slots for MXM graphics card module(s), making them easy to upgrade. Earlier this year, ASUS introduced a board with three MXM slots for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3850/3870 cards and has today announced a single-MXM slot card.
The card, called the Splendid HD 3850M, has an ATI Radeon RV670 MXM card with 512MB of memory. It is attached to a PCB with the Splendid HD video processor. With a 668MHz core and 828MHz memory clock, ASUS says the card gets 6000 points in 3DMark06. The unique feature about the Splendid HD 3850M is that it is shorter than the referenced ATI HD 3850/3870 design.
Thanks to the MXM modular design, users will be able to upgrade their graphics cards to the new ATI Radeon HD 4800/5800 series. Technically, an Nvidia MXM card should also work in this board.
