Default Vostro vs OptiPlex

Which Dell business desktop is better, the Vostro or OptiPlex?
I was looking at these with the Intel Core 2 Quad-Core-2400 and wondered which would be best for digital picture editing, minor video editing and general use, no heavy gaming?

Thanks

Herman

With respect to build quality, I tend to think that the Optiplexes are superior but with regards to specs, I tend to think that the Vostros are superior. As of now, the highest Vostro configuration gets you a Q6600 and an 8800GT and the highest Optiplex configuration gets you a Q6700 but only a 2400XT. Anything below that and you can probably find very similar specifications at very similar prices.

For your purposes I would honestly just go with the cheapest option for the configuration that you want; the lower-end Vostros seem to be cheaper than the lower-end Optiplex and the upper-end Optiplex seem to be cheaper than the upper-end Vostro. Depending on how much video editing you do, it may not even be worthwhile to get the quad; the cheapest quad configuration looks something on the lines of $700.

Of course, if you're willing to take the time, anyone on this board would tell you that you should definitely consider building your own...

Optiplex are of very high build quality. They are enterprise level machine, as reflected by their pricing. For example, and Optiplex is guaranteed to be silent, and the casing is not made of cheap plastic. Software wise, Optiplexes all use the same software image, so you can simply take your HD from your old Optiplex and use it on your new one without having to reinstall anything.

However, for your needs, a Vostro should be just fine. But, do note that the Vostro has a pretty old motherboard. If you want something more futureproof, consider the Dell XPS range.

I have the new dell vostro business desktop. It's very nice. Comes with a 20 inch screen and it's very fast. The quad core is so fast. I'm using for gaming too and I bought it with the 8800gt. School and gaming were my needs.

Good look with your purchase. I have no complaints right now.

Look at my specs for what I got.

It came to 1,000 but it was a lot more for the 8800gt graphics card. (Without the 8800gt it might be 800?). Free moniter included and there was a 500 dollars off coupon. That really persuaded me to buy it during the coupon week. I also got a good warranty so my final price was $1340.

Ditto. My college computer labs have them...along with a bunch of Macs.

Get whatever is cheapest with a quad-core and dedicated graphics.
