9600GT Sli is actually fantastic (beats 3870X2 and 8800Ultra sometimes) and is very reasonably priced. 1Gb 8800GT's would be a fantastic waste, as the cards can use precisely 0% of the extra 512mb effectively.

If you must go Sli, go 9600GT Sli. Otherwise, get a single 8800GT/G92 GTS. 8800GT Sli would be too uneconomical unless you got a stellar price.

And if you have money, the new 9800GTX is ok for a first time buyer, or the GX2 for someone with a lot of cash to invest.

Do not get the 1gb version of the 8800gt, to accommodate the extra 512mb, they had to downclock the card. so it performs worse then the 512mb 8800gt until you get to extremely high resolutions
