How does this system look? (Ordering Parts)

Hello everyone!

I am building this computer for primarily gaming, a little graphic design (photoshop) and Visual Studios programming.

Let me know any opinions, or suggestions for this build (particularly the case - fans - and ram.)

The cost came to around $2600 in parts from Newegg / Amazon.

Currently I have the good dell 30" and 24" monitors (ones with high color gamut, etc..)

My first thought is - expensive! So my suggestions revolve around saving a bit of money...

The 1000W PSU is overkill for what you're needing regardless of cost - nothing you've listed will require that kind of horsepower. If you want to stick with a modular Corsair I'd suggest the 750W PSU.

Ram has been very expensive lately. The OCZ tends to be cheaper right now. If you're set on 1600 CL7 you might try the OCZ Platinum.

IMHO if the GPU is a temp one - go cheap and then upgrade.

As far as case is concerned - it depends on what you're looking for. Cases seem to be as much personality as anything - yours says sleek sophisticated but willing to quietly show off. Choosing aluminum will certainly add cost. Might check the Lian Li's out for a bit of a savings. Or consider steel - plenty more to choose from.

Even the DVD drive is top of the $$$ heap. There are just as capable drives at half the price.

Alright I will take a look at a those suggestions! I would like to add I am a first time computer builder .

Previous Computers were Dell XPS Desktops and I have a Studio XPS 16 Laptop.

There are several CORSAIR XMS3 6GB sticks at 1600. The good stuff (lower latency CL7) will run you $200 and will kinda be waste due to CPU limitations. Getting CL7 1333 stuff would be a better choice and use of money. Do not get the higher latency (CL8 and CL9) 1600 as it will be slower than the lower latency 1333.

As others have said, the power supply is super overkill. The 750w Corsair previously suggested is a fantastic option.

Also, I don't know why you'd go and spend $400 on a GPU as a "temporary" investment. The 5870 is a great card. Won't be any need to replace it for a while.

If you have as much money as you appear to then I suggest buy two hard drives.. a smaller but fast one (maybe even an SSD..) to run your OS and then a second larger one for storage.

FT01 is a great case but very expensive. Cases are a very personal choice, so I'll just leave it at that.

Agree with much of what angelic said, however most DDR3 1600 with CL 9 can run at 1333 with CL 7, so if you can get the prior for cheaper its not a bade deal. Anyways, the differences between RAM is generally pretty small so dont pay $70 for little gains.

750HX is a great power supply, but if you are not intending to SLI/Xfire you can go even cheaper. The 650TX and Antec True Power New 650w are both good PSUs (and 650W earthwatts to save even more money would be ok as well)

If you dont need 2 TB of storage, angelic's suggestion of an SSD+ storage device would be really good since you will see a huge boost in terms of responsiveness from your computer

Scythe Mugen II is a great quiet cooler for its price. If you are looking the highes toverclock though, megahalems would be the way to go.

The thing about the Power Supply is I intend to possibly have 2 5870's or 2 of the newer Gforce 300 series in crossfire / sli when they come out. So would 1000w still be overkill?

For the hard drive, I read many positive things about the read/write of the Caviar Black 2TB -- and for the price 2TB seemed pretty good.

As far as price, my budget is $2600 from a monthly bonus at work -- so trying to stay within that area.

I tried researching most of the stuff I plan to purchase, but being a first time builder definitely hit some snags!

1000W would be overkill for two 5870s, the 750W corsair could probably run 4 5870s without any problem.

Dont know about the 300-series as there is little to none information about them, but Id assume them to at least use less power than the 200-series

and i do believe that the 300 series will require more than the 200 series. the 380 should be close to the 285

i would just go ahead an get the 1000watt, because if u do need more power in the future you wont have to reconnect everything and buy a new one, and then have a nice $120 750watt sitting around
